Evil Wears A Human Face–Tragedy in Colorado

By now, you’ve likely heard of the tragedy which occurred in Aurora, Colorado early this morning. If not, at about 12:30 A.M., an individual kicked in an emergency exit at a screening of the Dark Knight Rises, threw in some kind of smoke bomb, and then opened fire with at least three weapons.

Ten people died at the scene, and four others at area hospitals. Fifty others are wounded. The tragic toll is beyond my comprehension. How many families are now bereft of fathers, sons, mothers, sisters, husbands, wives?

The twenty some year old perpetrator was apprehended in a parking lot behind the theater without resistance. Surprisingly, by all accounts, he’s just a young man. He looks like one of us.

The monster wears a human face.

But his heart was somehow tragically twisted, dangerously darkened by demons real, or of his own design.

No motive has yet been released.

Was he just playing “Joker,” wanting to watch the world burn? We don’t know. And in the face of such overwhelming loss, what answer would truly satisfy? It might bring some small measure of closure–knowing why–but it won’t bring back the dead, or mend the shattered lives left in the wake of this monstrously senseless act.

While we comfort the grieving, and pray for their healing, let us consider Jesus’s words from Luke thirteen:

There were some present at that very time who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. And he answered them, “Do you think that these Galileans [Aurorans] were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” (Luke 13:1-5, ESV).

Will you join me in praying for the folks whose lives are forever changed?
