>Unintended consequences

>Unintended consequences. I’ve been thinking about them since I incorporated more fiber into my diet. Hey, I’m 41, and they tell me I need it! Anyway, nobody told me that with the fiber would come some… unintended consequences. They sneak up on me at the oddest times—these “consequences”–on the elevator, at the dinner table, in bed (ever popular). In trying to do something healthy, I’ve experienced an unwanted side-effect. I think sin is kinda like this. When I seek after what I think is good for me (or when we do)—to the exclusion of everything else—things may happen that I never intended (or even considered). That said, it’s not that it’s wrong for me—for us–to seek our own good, but if it’s all we seek, it’s to our detriment, and to the detriment of everyone around us. The Scriptures make it plain that we are to “Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” (Phil. 2:3-4, E.S.V.). Consider others better? Who’s going to look out for #1? What’s in it for me? This is messy stuff—getting involved in other people’s lives. It’s far easier to go our merry way, looking out for our own, uninvolved. But that’s not Jesus. That’s not what He did. He comes to us in our messy lives, gets involved, elevates us above ourselves. Makes us into what He made us to be. He bids us go and do likewise. Be His hands and feet. And the thing is—the really cool thing—that there are unintended consequences to doing good, too. Blessings that we could never imagine. That said, does anyone know how to incorporate more fiber into one’s diet without the other “unintended consequences?” I look forward to your comments.
